Though you might think exercise will aggravate your joint pain and stiffness, that's not the case. Lack of exercise actually can make your joints even more painful and stiff. That's because keeping your muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. Not exercising weakens those supporting muscles, creating more stress on your joints.”

This quote is from an article on the Harvard Medical School website which is entitled 4 Ways Exercise Helps Arthritis:

But here are 5 reasons why this is DIFFERENT:

  • This program shows you THE RIGHT WAY to exercise for arthritis, so you can get LONG-TERM relief from your pain and stiffness, and regain range of motion and full joint function, BUT ALSO NOT OVERDO IT, which can make your arthritis worse!

Exercise doesn’t work for most people who have arthritis.

This is because...

(1) Most arthritis exercise programs give people the wrong exercises.

When you have arthritis, exercise can be very effective for relieving pain, transforming stiffness into flexibility and mobility, and getting you back to doing all the daily things you love to do (and need to do)… but ONLY if you do the right exercises.

Most arthritis programs give people exercises that don’t target the right muscles, joints and ligaments, or don’t target them in the right way, or give exercises that are too aggressive and intense, which can actually make your arthritis worse!

You need to do the right exercises to get long-term relief from your arthritis, and not make things worse.

You’ll see in a minute, that the exercises in this program were selected based on the conclusions of the latest scientific research and studies, so they are definitely the right ones.

(2) Most arthritis exercise programs put the exercises in the wrong order.

You can make a lot of progress with exercise, even if you have severe arthritis symptoms. You can increase your range of motion in your joints and muscles a lot more than you might imagine. You can make your muscles a lot stronger than you might think. You can make your limbs and joints a lot more flexible than you’d probably believe.

You can accomplish all of that with a technique called ‘exercise stacking.’ Exercise stacking is just putting exercises in a particular order so that each exercise builds on the one before it. This allows your joints, muscles and ligaments to slowly and gradually adjust to each next exercise and each next challenge. Doing exercises in this kind of sequence is especially effective for people who have a condition like arthritis that causes significant limitations in range of motion, flexibility, and overall mobility.

The new arthritis exercise program you’re going to see on this page utilizes ‘exercise stacking’ so you can make excellent progress while still protecting your joints and muscles from further damage.

(3) Most arthritis exercise programs aren’t comprehensive enough.

Scientific research has shown that using a combination of multiple different modalities or approaches to helping muscles, joints and ligaments return to their normal functioning states is much more effective for reducing the pain, stiffness and swelling associated with arthritis. But, most arthritis exercise programs include only one or two modalities in their routines.

In the section just below, you’ll see that my new program uses no less than 8 modalities and covers every joint and muscle where arthritis occurs. You’ll see that my program is much more comprehensive than most others, and this is a big part of why it works better.

(4) Most arthritis exercise programs aren’t based on the latest scientific research and recommendations.

Many arthritis exercise programs are so outdated you’ll receive them on a piece of paper that looked like it was photocopied from a document from the 1960’s. We’ve come a long way since then, and learned a lot about how exercise can be beneficial for arthritis sufferers. You’ll see in a section below that my program was carefully researched and designed and developed in accordance with the latest scientific findings and studies.

(5) Most arthritis exercise programs are difficult to learn, difficult to do, time-consuming, complicated, and confusing.

Even if an arthritis exercise program is based on research and scientific studies, most are still too complicated, difficult, and time-consuming. And this means that most people will find them frustrating to do, and will give up and never do them on a consistent basis. It is incredibly important for an exercise program to be as easy as possible, simple as possible, and as fast as possible, so that people will actually do it, and get the results they want.

This program was designed to be all of those things, so you will actually do it on a consistent basis and get the results you want, but never at the cost of losing effectiveness. Even though this program is very easy, simple and fast, it still works remarkably well.

(6) Most arthritis exercise programs don’t offer any support.

It happens to most people. They start a new exercise routine and they get stuck on one or two or three of the exercises. They aren’t sure how to do it exactly right. Or they don’t have enough range of motion or flexibility to do the exercise as it’s shown. What now? The problem is most arthritis exercise programs don’t offer any support, or any way to ask questions and get answers. And so, people are left on their own to figure things out, which usually means they are doing the exercises wrong, or they give up and don’t continue with the program.

Here’s a quick look at the 8 different approaches you’ll have at your disposal in the Arthritis Handbook program:

(1) RANGE OF MOTION

Arthritis causes pain, stiffness and swelling in your joints, which makes it difficult and unpleasant to exercise or even move. Many people avoid physical activity for this reason, but with decreased physical activity, you begin losing range of motion in your joints. Decreased range of motion in your joints leads to even less physical activity, which makes your arthritis worse, and so on. It’s very important to reverse this downward spiral, and the first step is to improve the range of motion in your joints. In this program, we’ll start with very easy, very gentle movements that will begin to increase the range of motion in your affected joints. This will start to alleviate your pain, help you regain normal joint function, and make it more comfortable for you to move your body.

(2) STRETCH & LENGTHEN

When you have arthritis, the muscles that surround and support your joints will tighten and shorten. This is a natural defense mechanism your body uses to protect the joints from further damage, but this also causes these surrounding muscles to begin pulling on the joints, putting more stress on them. This causes more pain, stiffness and inflammation. If we gently stretch and lengthen these muscles, they will eventually return to their normal size, stop pulling on your joints and stop adding unnecessary stress. This will finally allow your joints to heal and will reduce the pain, stiffness and swelling you feel.

(3) LOOSEN & LUBRICATE

All of your joints are surrounded by a soft tissue that produces synovial fluid, which acts like oil in a car engine. This synovial fluid lubricates the bones that meet at your joints, so they can move together easily and smoothly. In this program, we’ll be performing certain movements that encourage the circulation of this synovial fluid, which keeps your joints loose and lubricated, which makes moving a whole lot easier and less painful!

(4) STRENGTH

Arthritis causes pain, stiffness and swelling in your joints, which makes it difficult and unpleasant to do any kind of physical activity. Many people decrease or avoid physical activity for this reason, but a decrease in physical activity causes your muscles to atrophy and become weak. When your muscles become weak, they can no longer support your joints as they are designed to, and this means your joints now have to work much harder to help you do even basic body movements. This additional work, stress and strain that your joints now need to bear can lead to a worsening of your arthritis, injuries, and other damage to your joints. We need to strengthen your muscles—especially those that surround and support your joints, so we can take the additional stress and strain off of your joints, so they can finally heal and recover.

(5) ENDURANCE

To reduce and reverse the symptoms of arthritis, we need to make sure your joints are well supported by their surrounding muscles. A muscle needs endurance, or the ability to work for an extended period of time if it is to properly support your joints. Without endurance, your muscles cannot support your joints when you move your body, and your joints will be forced to do extra work that it was never designed to do, which will make your arthritis worse, and may also cause injuries. In the program, we will be performing gentle endurance-building movements that will gradually build up the endurance in your muscles, so your joints can finally be well-supported again, and start to heal!

(6) ACTIVATION

To make sure your joints are being properly supported, we also need to make sure the surrounding muscles have proper activation. Many of us sit too much every day and don’t use our muscles enough, and this “trains” these muscles to not wake up and work (activate) when they are supposed to. This puts undue stress and strain on other smaller muscles and your joints, which can make your arthritis worse and cause injury. In the program, we will perform some gentle activation exercises that will retrain your muscles to wake up and work (activate) when they are supposed to, so your joints are properly supported and can finally heal, which will start reducing your arthritis pain, stiffness, and swelling!

(7) CONTRACT & RELAX

In the program, we’ll use a special type of stretch called contract & relax. With this technique, we can get a deeper stretch in certain muscles that support your joints. When we contract the opposing muscle, our target muscle (the one we’re trying to stretch) automatically relaxes, and then we immediately stretch that target muscle that is now relaxed, which allows us to achieve a deeper stretch. This helps us decrease tightness and tension in and around your joints, which is especially helpful for healing and recovery.

(8) MOBILITY & MOVEMENT

One of the important goals of this program is to restore your ability to move your body fully, as you were able to before arthritis. Many of the movements we’ll be performing in this program are designed to retrain your muscles, joints and ligaments so you can regain full functionality and movement in your body. And since everything is interconnected, improving mobility and movement even in just one muscle or one joint will improve movement in other areas of your body, so your results will compound as you do the program more and more!
