In most cases, for most people, knee pain develops as a matter of injury or underutilization of the lower half of the body, and both of those become more likely as we age.

Our society has become more and more sedentary. We all sit for way too many hours every day, and most of us have for years! This means we aren’t moving our body enough, especially our lower body. This means that our muscles and joints that surround and support our knees are becoming more and more inactive, and this inactivity makes these muscles TIGHT, SHORT, and WEAK.

This means that when it comes time for your body to do a movement like get out of your chair, or walk down a flight of stairs, or get into your car, the muscles and joints that are supposed to activate and HELP your knees to do these movements, DON’T... because they CAN’T… because they’re too weak and can’t activate!

And, your poor knees are left all alone to do the job of multiple muscles and other joints.

This puts WAY TOO MUCH STRESS on your knees... and this is what causes damage, injury and chronic pain.

There was a study entitled A Standardized “Rescue” Exercise Program for Symptomatic Flare-up of Knee Osteoarthritis: Description and Safety Considerations, that concluded:

“Having a predefined and standardized rescue exercise option appears beneficial, and did not result in further worsening of exacerbated knee OA symptoms. The intervention may be particularly relevant for patients with knee OA who have more severe symptoms.”

This research studied the effect of what they called a “rescue” option, which is a much less intense version of a standard, effective exercise program for knee pain. This “rescue” option was used when patients with knee pain were having a flare up or more intense pain on any given day, and the researchers found:

  • This less intense “rescue” option was able to be used on the days where knee pain patients had flare ups and more intense pain and it didn’t make their pain worse or cause more damage
  • It actually decreased their pain instead!
  • Because people didn’t feel like they were being forced to “push through their pain,” they were more likely to keep doing the exercise program, which ultimately produced better results for them
